Daniel Dale reports on President Donald Trump and American politics as the Washington Bureau Chief for the Toronto Star. Known for his fact-checking of all of Trump’s statements, he appears frequently on CNN and MSNBC. He is a popular presence on Twitter, where he has more than 500,000 followers. Before his move to Washington in 2015, he covered Toronto Mayor Rob Ford as a city hall reporter and bureau chief from 2010 to 2014. He has won a National Newspaper Award for short features and two Goff Penny Awards as Canada’s best young journalist. He is a native of Thornhill, Ontario and a graduate of York University’s Schulich School of Business. Daniel will explain how we can build trust in an era of fake news and misinformation.
Jodie Glean is the Director of the Anti-Racism & Cultural Diversity Office at the University of Toronto. She attained her Master of Arts in Educational Studies from Concordia University and is currently completing her PhD in education. Jodie brings more than seven years of experience in the field of equity and inclusion in the postsecondary sector. In 2017, Jodie was the recipient of the Leadership in Learning Award from the Canadian Association for the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment in Higher Education. Jodie will speak on how we can advance equity and inclusion in our work as U of T communicators.
Elamin Abdelmahmoud is a news curation editor at BuzzFeed News and writes the daily morning newsletter. His work has appeared in Maclean’s magazine, The Globe and Mail and The Guardian. He is a regular current-affairs panelist for CBC News and a culture commentator for Q on CBC Radio. Elamin will discuss how we can cut through the noise and identify great stories in a digital environment.
